Innovative and flexible volunteer opportunities that connect the generations

| Who we are...What we do...Why we do it |
Each week The Carter Burden Center for the Aging has dozens of volunteers under the age of 18 working with its seniors. Volunteers participate in everything from Meals- on- Heels delivery to calling Bingo at the Carter Burden Luncheon Club. They share lunch with our senior center members, visit our homebound seniors and grocery shop for anyone not able to get out or carry shoppping bags up steps. Intergenerational volunteers also enrich the lives of the elderly by staging performances or concerts, assisting the administrative staff, making telephone reassurance calls and teaching computer classes. It is an innovative and flexible volunteer program that creates a win/win situation for both students needing to perform community service and seniors looking to expand their social network.

My Summer
by Natalie Legros , Summer Inter
Working at The Carter Burden Center this summer was excellent! I had such a good time for several reasons. During my 6 weeks there, I was doing work that I didn’t expect to do. When I first found out where I would be working, I had an idea of some of the things I would be doing since I did community service there before during my freshman year of high school, so I was really excited. But I didn’t just do meals on heels, which is one thing that I loved about my job. I wasn’t just working on one thing the whole time I was there, but I was doing different things back and forth from the luncheon club and the office, and I didn’t dislike any of those tasks. I enjoyed delivering and serving meals, teaching computer classes, doing the friendly visits, the mailing, Chuck’s book, the organic project, and the other assignments that were there to help out with. Another thing I liked about my experience this summer was meeting a bunch of wonderful people. I was glad to have such nice people who made me feel welcome and comfortable during my time there. I was ecstatic for the fact that they could help me if I needed any help with anything and explain stuff to me so I can do my work right. Everyone at the center were a huge help (if they weren’t there, then I probably would’ve felt confused). The kind of community that the Carter Burden Center has is wonderful. I loved working at The Carter Burden Center this summer, and I even miss the experience. It taught me a lot about how it is to have a job, that type in particular. I would love to work there again!!
