Winter 2008 Community Newsletter
Welcome from the Director
Our Winter newsletter is coming to you in the midst of presidential primaries and Super Bowl revelry. We hope that you will be able to take a bit of a break from all that to see what we have been up to over the past six months. In November we held our 28th Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony where we had the privilege of honoring Joseph A. Cabrera, Executive Vice President, Cushman & Wakefield with our Business Leadership Award and Igal Jellinek, Executive Director, Council of Senior Centers and Services of NYC with our Carter Burden Humanitarian Award. As always, the Rainbow Room provided a glorious backdrop for this event. We are grateful to our honorees and to all our supporters for making the Dinner such a success.
In this issue you will read about various day trips that our senior center provides for members. These trips not only provide opportunities for people to get away from the bustle of city life but also help seniors remain active and maintain their physical well-being. The field trips are just one example of the health and wellness programs that are critical components of our senior center. Please click “Programs” to learn more about activities at the senior center.
I want to extend our best wishes to you for a healthy and happy New Year. Now, sit back and enjoy this edition of our Newsletter.

Seniors Were On the Go in 2007
2007 marked an exciting year for seniors at the Carter Burden Luncheon Club. As well as being open for daily lunch and activities, many people are not aware that the Luncheon Club also offers exciting and fun field trips for seniors. Megan Huston, the Carter Burden Luncheon Club's Assistant Director
said, "Scheduling a variety of day trips gives members the opportunity to keep physically, mentally and culturally active." Some of the popular day trips in 2007 included Atlantic City, a day at the beach in Bayhead, New Jersey, the Jack-O-Lantern Blaze display in Croton on Hudson, New York, and a private tour and show at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The majority of these trips sell out, and are kept at low prices so that many seniors may afford them. To see pictures from these trips, click here. If you would like to find out more about the Carter Burden field trips, or are interested in sponsoring a trip, please contact Megan Huston at hustonm@burdencntr.org.
28th Annual Awards Ceremony & Dinner Dance
On November 26th, 2007 approximately 350 people gathered at the Rainbow Room to celebrate and support the Carter Burden Center for the Aging at the 28th Annual Awards Ceremony and Dinner Dance. This year's honorees were Joseph A. Cabrera, Executive Vice President of Cushman & Wakefield, who received the Business Leadership Award. Igal Jellinek, the Executive Director of the Council of Senior Centers and Services of New York City, Inc. received the Carter Burden Humanitarian Award. The dinner chairs were Bruce E. Mosler, President and CEO of Cushman & Wakefield, and David H.W. Turner, Senior Vice President, Finance of The Thomson Corporation. To see more pictures from this year's Fall Benefit, click here.

A Night Out on the Town With Our Volunteers
Over 100 people gathered for our annual 'Volunteer Recognition & Recruitment Party' held at the Black Door in November. Attended by staff members, board members, and volunteers, all were able to socialize and enjoy an evening out on the town! This annual party is to recognize and appreciate all of the efforts of our volunteers. Whether someone volunteers for an hour or on a weekly basis, it is greatly appreciated by the staff and seniors because the support of volunteers is crucial to the success of the Carter Burden Center.
There are many options for someone who wants to volunteer - a few examples are grocery shopping, becoming a friendly visitor, serving and delivering meals through our Luncheon Program, or coming to the Center to share your talents with the seniors. To learn more about volunteering at the Carter Burden Center, you can visit the web page by clicking here, or call Eric Cooper of Volunteer Services at 212.879.7400 x117.

"I began volunteering at the Carter Burden Luncheon Program in September of ‘07 and have been teaching computer classes a few times a week. Teaching these classes to the elderly has only made me more passionate to help the elderly and pursue a career in gerontology. At the Carter Burden Center, I have the day to day interaction, which I enjoy. The most gratifying part of teaching computer classes is when I hear, ‘Thank you so much for helping me!’”

Carter Burden Associates
The Carter Burden Associates are off to an exciting start in 2008. In November 2007, they held their annual fundraiser, raising over $1,600 in raffle ticket sales. All of the money raised directly funded the 4th Annual Winter Dance for seniors in February. Over 125 seniors enjoyed an afternoon of lunch, a photo booth, raffle prizes, and dancing to live jazz music! To learn more about the Associates, or if you are interested in joining the program,
