Spring 2007 Community Newsletter
Welcome from the Director
I am pleased to share with you our Spring newsletter which is coming following our Spring Benefit Auction. We were thrilled to once again host the auction at Sotheby’s with the wonderful Hugh Hildesley serving as auctioneer. Approximately 150 people bid on 6 unique packages and also pledged support to our home delivered meal program and our Cultural Connections program. We are most grateful to the Spring Benefit Co-Chairs Mrs. Henry Breck, Alison and George Brokaw, and Mrs. Mark Hampton for their work in making the evening such a success.
Cultural Connections, a program that received much support from the Spring Benefit attendees, provides opportunities for seniors to participate in the cultural life of this city. Through Cultural Connections, participants can attend ballet, theater, jazz, opera as well as museums and “Meet the Artist” performances at Lincoln Center. This is a unique program which has helped people remain active, fostered friendships and reduced social isolation. It has made a difference in the lives of so many people and we are thrilled to be able to offer it.
Please sit back and enjoy this issue of our newsletter. We like to hear from you so do contact us with your thoughts. Best wishes for an enjoyable summer.

Celebrating Senior Center Week
May 14 - 18th marks the annual "Senior Center Week", and the Burden Center will be celebrating all week long with fun activites and special events for the seniors. Some of the week's festivites include a Spiritual Meditation, Family Day where each senior can bring a guest to lunch and have their picture taken, a Community Volunteer Recognition Day as well as a Game Day. There will also be raffle prizes throughout the week. We will finish off the week with a delicious ice cream sundae celebration!
Enjoying the Arts Through Cultural Connections
Our Cultural Connections Program experienced phenomenal growth in 2006 offering 47 events at 17 venues to seniors who want to participate in the artistic and cultural life of the city. Events include Concerts, Broadway and Off Broadway plays and musicals, Jazz and Museum Tours – the backbone of traditional American culture. We are excited about our new partnership with New York City Center and New York Opera. Participants are enjoying the Encores! Series at City Center, as well as Madama Butterfly, Pirates of Penzance and Flavia at City Opera. All offerings are at deeply reduced prices.

The Success at Knickerbocker
The senior residents of the Knickerbocker only have to go downstairs! This chapter of the Carter Burden Center is located in the first level of the Knickerbocker apartment complex on the Upper East Side and many of the residents there are seniors. This unit is not only growing in numbers of users, it's also growing in services provided. Much like the other chapters, Knickerbocker offers a walk-in unit for seniors who need guidance in such areas as housing, transportation, and finances. They also have a computer lab which gets daily use, and a great new 'Library' program. People have donated hundreds of books to the Knickerbocker office and they have started a borrowing system which many seniors are taking advantage of. For more information on this office, please contact Elissa Kleinhaus at 212.860.5044 or Debi Wong at 212.879.7400 x205.
