Welcome from the Director
Senior Center Week is a Hit at the CBLC
Crime Victims Program: Helping Seniors Protect Themselves
Meet a senior...

Welcome from the Director
We recently celebrated Senior Center Week at the Carter Burden Luncheon Club & Senior Program. The Club had a week full of exciting activities like special workshops and meals, and we also honored some of our outstanding daytime volunteers: Alicia Bliss received the Carter Burden Senior Volunteer Award for leading the Club’s weekly meditation class; and the students from Urban Academy received a standing ovation from the seniors for serving lunch each week for the past year.

This season we also held our annual Spring Benefit on April 3rd. We held our cocktail reception and live auction at Sotheby’s, and it was quite the success. We had eleven wonderful auction packages ranging from a trip to Canyon Ranch in Tucson to a dinner party catered by Glorious Food. The money raised will support our many programs, and we would like to specially thank all auction prize donors, Jamie Niven, Sotheby’s, the Spring Benefit Committee and its Co-Chairs, George Brokaw, Duane Hampton and Hannah McFarland.

I hope you not only enjoy the information contained in our newsletter but that you find it helpful as well. Please contact us with your thoughts or any questions at info@burdencntr.org. We want to hear from you.

Senior Center Week is a Big Hit at the CBLC
May was Older Americans Month, and the Carter Burden Center celebrated with ‘Senior Center Week’ – a week of exciting activities at the Carter Burden Luncheon Club and Senior Program. Events included a Family Day, special workshops and presentations, movie showings, a Community Volunteer Recognition, and performances by our members. Many seniors came to participate in the festivities, with attendance averaging over 100 people each day.

To kick off the week, executive Director Bill Dionne served as M.C. while CBLC members showed off past purchases (including a sharp Armani suit, worn by member Dell Shorter) from Anna’s Boutique, our flea market. And of course, the special treats that were served all week were a big hit- a dessert buffet, an Italian pastry day and ice cream sundaes on Friday. The Burden Center is especially grateful to Emmanuel Nail & Spa, Anneliese Bakery, and Eva's Garden, neighborhood businesses who donated raffle prizes and helped make this a fabulous Senior Center Week that is sure to be remembered by many

Crime Victims Program: Helping Seniors Protect Themselves
While the newspaper headlines may say that crime is down, people continue to become crime victims. An old crime -- picking your pocket on a bus – is still very popular and successful. And new crimes are being created by thieves every day, especially through the use of computers. The Crime Victims Program (CVP), working with the 19th Police Precinct, serves older adults who have been the victim of a crime. They also help seniors learn how to protect themselves through educational programs and crime prevention literature.

Carter Burden Center Luncheon Club Beckons
Sailors and Marines on Shore Leave

The Carter Burden Center was pleased to collaborate with the Mayor’s Volunteer Center on the Community Relations’ Fleet Week Project.

The men and women of the USS Kearsarge, a 40,500-ton amphibious assault ship, docked at pier 88 near West 48 th St after months in the Persian Gulf. They arrived at the Luncheon Club on May 21 st in their crisp summer whites and delivered meals to over 125 homebound seniors. They also prepared and served lunch at the Club. There was lively conversation and shared experiences both past and present ranging from the operation of heavy machinery to changes in dress code with seniors who had also served. Grace Campbell was very impressed with the Chaplain and learned to distinguish rank insignia ranging from Lieutenant to Lieutenant Commander.

Together, 11 navy personnel and 4 marines contributed 45 volunteer hours and our seniors genuinely enjoyed their company.

"I'm not sure who gets more out of the experience...my senior or me!!""
"I have been involved in many volunteer activities and I have to say that my experience as a Friendly Visitor through the Carter Burden Center has been the most rewarding experience yet. Getting paired up with a senior and spending time with that person each week really gives you the opportunity to get to know each other and form a real relationship. From helping around the house to playing games, you really get the chance to talk, share and connect on a more personal level. Truthfully, I'm not sure who gets more out of the experience... my senior or me!! Everyone can learn so much by bringing different generations together to share experiences, and the Friendly Visitor program is a great way to do just that!”
