Meet a senior...

Welcome from the Director
As we enter the holiday season, all of us at the Carter Burden Center are aware that we have much to celebrate in a year that included continued growth and responses to new challenges.  An exciting new program is our Food Pantry which we developed because we recognized that many seniors were not taking advantage of community based food distribution sites.  Twice per month, seniors can come to our headquarters and pick up food staples that supplement their monthly grocery shopping.

We are most grateful to our friends and supporters who participated in our 27th Annual Dinner Dance and Awards Ceremony and who made it possible for us to have such a successful event.  I am thrilled to be able to tell you that with the help of our Dinner Chair, Jeffrey S. Tabak, Business Leadership Honoree, James G. Dinan and Carter Burden Humanitarian Honoree James A. Lebenthal, the agency raised a record $1.3 million.

I hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter and I extend my best wishes to you for a healthy and happy New Year.

Intergenerational Programs

School is back in session and the Carter Burden Luncheon Club is teeming with students. Already over 120 incredibly hard-working students have served 600 hours in our intergenerational program and that’s just the start of it! Throughout the year, students can be found working in every corner of our center from delivering meals to our homebound, to visiting senior companions, to creating holiday decorations at our club. Students come from all over the city and the country: Trinity High, The Dalton School, East Harlem High, PS 226, The Hewitt School, and Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. Every day our congregate members note how much life the students add to the center and are always willing to let the students know how appreciative they are of their hard work. Through this program the center takes two seemingly separate populations and helps them realize their commonalities through mutual dependence. Monthly Pet Group
Starting in April of this year, CBCA has been offering monthly group "guest." The pet and owner spend about an hour with the seniors. People share memories of pets and socialize and play with the “guest”. There are cookies and refreshments served. Past participants have noted that they love sharing their experiences with animals and having an afternoon to meet a fun, exciting pet. The next pet group will be on February 21st, 2007 at 2 pm at the Carter Burden Luncheon Club.

Fashion Show

In October we hosted our fifth annual fashion show. Orchestrated by Valda Webster who recruited models with her infectious enthusiasm for style, and with generous donations for participant gift bags from community businesses such as Alice Hair Salon, Laura Geller Make up and Bliss Spa we had our most successful show yet. Over twenty of our members and staff of the CBCA walked the catwalk this year with equally glamorous escorts suited up for the occasion. Fashions ranged from elegant evening wear to handmade scarves and sweaters to a surprising moment where one of our members began her red carpet walk fully clothed to ultimately reveal a stunning leopard print swimsuit - proving you're never too old for fashion!

Senior Travels
October was a good month for our seniors who enjoy trips. On October 18th, 46 of our members were treated to a day at the races at Belmont race track. Attendees enjoyed a delicious buffet luncheon and placed bets on their favorite horses. There was even a race named in honor of The Carter Burden Center for the Aging!  Additionally, on October 21st the Burden Center Associates sponsored a "Fall Wine Trip." Gorgeous weather made for a beautiful day at Pindar Winery for lunch and a wine tasting followed by a stop at a farm stand for corn and other goodies. We are very grateful to everyone who made these special events possible.

"I feel very, very lucky...(that I) found a volunteering opportunity with Carter Burden"
"I first began volunteering with the Carter Burden Center about 5 or 6 years ago, delivering meals to homebound Seniors.  From the start, the experience was fantastic, the people I met -- both Seniors and other volunteers -- were always just plain wonderful and to this day I still deliver meals.  Now that I am in the Associates group my volunteering utilizes even more of my skills and time for the other myriad programs and diverse events that the Center makes available to the Seniors.  I feel very, very lucky in that respect, having found a volunteering opportunity with Carter Burden that not only is, hopefully, fulfilling for the Seniors but equally fulfilling for me as well!”
-Donald Pun,
Volunteer and Co-Chair of the Burden Center Associates

Edward Trambert , CBLC Member
Edward describes himself as a "very, very lucky man." He will be 85 in December and is thankful for everyday he has to spend at the club and with his family.

Edward comes to CBLC "because there's always good food and it's a nice place." He enjoys going on the many trips offered at the Luncheon Club.

"The important thing is that you are healthy and that you gave square and fair"
