They all knew the menu would be beef stew, rice and carrots, but the seniors who were waiting for lunch at the CBLC weren’t expecting the visitors who stopped by to say hello: NY Governor George Pataki, along with then-candidate for NY City Council District 5, Dr. Joel Zinberg, and City Councilmember elect Jessica Lapin.

Barbara Bush, Scooby Doo, Aphrodite and more stopped by the Carter Burden Luncheon Club to celebrate Halloween. The center was decorated with jack'o'lantern centerpieces, festive streamers and balloons, and of course, lots of candy!
"Going once.going twice.SOLD!" For the second year in a row, the Burden Center's Spring Benefit has featured a live auction of wonderful packages. Executive Director Bill Dionne served once again as the fabulous and funny auctioneer at this year's event, which was held at the Union Club on April 11th. Blue paddles from Sotheby's were going up and down all over the room as bidding wars ensued for prizes such as golf at Shinnecock Golf Club, a mini iPod and a ladies spa day.
Sometimes an offer to help can turn into something much greater. Five years ago, when Anna Matlak was asked if she could assist in the Carter Burden Luncheon Club's flea market, she graciously obliged. "I'm always helping people," says the vibrant 73 year-old Ms. Matlak. She eventually took over the responsibility when the person in charge was no longer able.
The Carter Burden Center has experienced a growth in young professional volunteers over the last few years. As a result, the Center formed a junior committee for those who are dedicated to helping the community's seniors on a more active basis. This group, the Burden Center Associates, started two years ago with a core group of four volunteers and has now grown to fifteen active members.
Last January, area seniors braved the wintry weather to spend the afternoon dancing up a storm of their own. The Homecoming Dance for Seniors, held at All Souls Church, was sponsored by the Carter Burden Center Associates, a volunteer group of young professionals. All Souls graciously donated the space for the dance, and so the Associates transformed Reidy Friendship Hall into a patriotic vision of red, white, and blue.
